Frequently Asked Questions

Who has acupuncture?

Many people come to acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions and some because they feel generally unwell but have no clear diagnosis. Others choose acupuncture to enhance their general feeling of wellbeing. Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages, including babies and children. It can also be very effectively used alongside conventional medicine.

What happens when I go for treatment?

On you first visit the consultation will last for one hour. You will be asked about your current symptoms, what treatment you may have received, your medical history, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns, life style etc and emotional state. These, along with your demeanour, presentation, feeling the pulse and looking at your tongue begins to help form a diagnosis. I will then discuss with you the next steps and suggest a course of treatment. Those wanting immediate relief from pain will fast-track through to emergency treatment on the first visit. Treatments last for 45 minutes.

What does it feel like?

Acupucture needles are much finer than needles used for injections and bloodtests. When the needle is gently inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache.

Is it safe?

The results of two independent surveys pubished in the British Medical Journal in 2001 concluded that the risk of serious adverse reaction to acupuncture is less than 1 in 10,000. The needles used are sterile, single use, and disposable.
